Kamishibai: Japanese Storytelling Through Visual Art

July 8 – July 12

9 am – 12 pm

Ages 8 – 18

Presented in Collaboration with Youth Theatre Northwest

“Kamishibai” is a unique Japanese street performance that is said to be the prototype of Anime. Youth Theatre Northwest has once again invited two artists from Japan, Ta-Chan (Kamishibai performer) and Teru-Kun (visual artist) to lead a week-long camp in how to create and perform Kamishibai. In this camp, held on-site at the Bellevue Arts Museum, participants will learn two types of Kamishibai: a “Picture Story,” in which the performer tells one complete story using picture panels; and an “Interactive Story,” which uses picture panels to involve the audience in telling a joke or singing a song. No previous art or performance experience are necessary to join. The two artists will guide participants of all levels so that everyone can enjoy the process, learn new skills, and take home a Kamishibai story of their own.

  • Half-day Camp $350

This camp session will be held in-person at BAM (510 Bellevue Way NE Bellevue)

Exploring Sculpting and Animation with Open World by DigiPen

July 15 - July 19
9 am – 4 pm
Ages 6-8

For young learners, expressing themselves through art can be a crucial stage in their development, and the artwork they create at this age often become cherished keepsakes. While they may have plenty of time to practice and improve their craft, it’s never too early to pick up some of the tried-and-true principles of animation and sculpting.

Join DigiPen Open World educators for this introductory workshop at the Bellevue Arts Museum, providing young learners with techniques that will help them bring what they see in their mind into the real world. Instructors will guide campers through the basics of drawing, painting, and sculpting, and help them to then transform their artistic creations into an animated work, using stop-motion and traditional 2D animation.

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to apply their new understanding of design fundamentals to bring all of their future artwork to life.

  • Full Day Camp $750
