Devon Yan is a young fashion designer who was the winner of the 2016 Independent Design Runway Show at The Bellevue Collection.

Yan’s artistic background goes back all the way to his childhood; his father was a renowned Opera singer from South China, and it was as a child that he developed a passion for the garment and the way it can alter the perception of a person’s image. With that almost magical concept in mind, Yan seeks to mine the different elements surrounding us as inspiration for his work, combined with different pattern making techniques, a play on textures, all the while borrowing from different cultures and eras.

The 6 pieces displayed in this pop-up show belong to Yan’s previous collection "The Artisan" and "Wild Garden," with several garments inspired by current BAM exhibitions Alex Katz: A Life in Print and FEMAIL: AMPM (2.0).

"The Artisan" is inspired by modern architecture. The edgy seam lines used to construct the garments, in combination with a color blocking technique, create a contrasting color texture that expresses Yan’s recent favorite art form—the polygon style.

"Wild Garden" focuses on texture through the use of embroidered flowers, hand-beading, and hand-pleated fabrics. These garments showcase the intricate details and beauty that stem from what Yan describes as his imagination garden—the source of his inspiration.
