Mapping Truths
Mapping Truths
Maps have traditionally been seen as a means to represent objective, measurable truth in order for us to make sense of our world. However, maps always reflect their maker’s viewpoint—a cartographer always chooses a center point. In recent decades, contemporary artists have embraced the idea that different maps can show different viewpoints, none of which are wrong, but rather provide multiple truths. Mapping Truths is a show about the ways artists use maps to recognize our own perspectives. The artists in Mapping Truths use the traditional format of maps in creative and personal ways to explore communities that are important to them. These maps show different perspectives from many communities, all of which are true.
This exhibition is the result of the Emerging Curator Initiative, a partnership between the Museology Graduate Program at the University of Washington and Bellevue Arts Museum. The Emerging Curator, Siri Benn, has worked with BAM staff, university faculty, and local artists over the course of a year to realize this exhibit.
