Electric Coffin: Future Machine is on view at Bellevue Arts Museum February 3 – September 10, 2017
Bellevue, WA—Opening February 3, 2017, Electric Coffin: Future Machine is an installation by Seattle creative studio Electric Coffin. Over its seven months at BAM, Future Machine will transform and expand through collaborations with local artists and makers, tradespeople, industry leaders, technology innovators, non-profits, and other creatives. The installation will consist of five distinct phases, each of which signal a stage of development in the unfolding of Future Machine: Idea, Fuel, Mechanics, Illumination, and Future. Collaborators will contribute their own unique components to each phase, demonstrating the potential for innovation encouraged by unconventional collaborations and mergers of diverse strengths and perspectives. Launching with the generation of a central energy source (the "Idea"), the composite machine will gradually grow to fill the Klorfine Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Museum. This immersive presentation of Electric Coffin's BAM-sited creative laboratory invites visitors to witness the unfurling of an idea from start to finish as it builds upon the detritus of the past to embody new forms, and functions, and technologies. BAM and Electric Coffin will organize and host a conversation series around each phase of the exhibition to foster discussion and bring the community together.
Based in Seattle, Electric Coffin specializes in location-based, one-of-a-kind works of art and creative salvage installations. The studio consists of Justin Kane Elder, Stefan Hofmann, and Patrick "Duffy" De Armas, who describe their team as "a super deluxe art machine." Collectively, all four members (all of whom lead careers as individual artists in addition to their work with the studio) represent diverse artistic backgrounds, covering everything from sculpture to painting to graphic design. Each work they create is tailored to its location's unique style, audience, and function.
Electric Coffin: Future Machine is organized by Bellevue Arts Museum and guest curated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken.
