Held in conjunction with the exhibition Electric Coffin: Future Machine, the Future Machine Conversations series hosts artists, thinkers, and industry leaders, inviting them to dissect important issues and offering diverse perspectives inspired by the exhibition. Each iteration corresponds to a phase of this seven-month evolving exhibition.

 

Fuel

Artist Gustavo Martinez, artist Etsuko Ichikawa, and Luis Martinez of Onni join moderator Dave Rosencrans to launch Future Machine’s second phase, FUEL. The panel will explore the inspiration behind the evolution of the exhibition and delve into the questions that arise from Future Machine’s entrance into the FUEL phase.

Presenters

Etsuko Ichikawa

Etsuko Ichikawa is a Tokyo-born, Seattle-based, multi-media artist. Ichikawa’s work has been exhibited internationally, including The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Seattle Art Museum, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, and The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo. She is a co-founder of Artists for Japan, a Seattle-base grassroots group to support the relief efforts of Great East Japan earthquake and aftermath, and a member of NOddIN, a Tokyo-based collective of filmmakers who are paying attention to various social, political, and environmental issues.

Gustavo Martinez

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and raised in California, Gustavo Martinez is an artist living and working in Washington State. He received a Masters of Fine Art from the University of Washington and was the recipient of the Parnassus Teaching with Excellence award. He has studied sacred archaeological sites in Southern Mexico and traditional indigenous pottery in Nicaragua. He has also worked as a consultant with for Ecofiltro SA (Guatemala), helping to organize the first annual ceramic symposium and exhibition to raise funds for rural Guatemalan communities in need.

Luis Martinez

Luis Martinez has spent the last two decades in the local construction industry across tradecraft, supervision and management roles. He is now Senior Project Manager for Onni Contracting and leading the team at the 1120 Denny Way project currently under construction in South Lake Union. He is also managing the Demolition of the Seattle Times building at 1120 John St. Luis is a certified practitioner of LEAN construction and live in West Seattle.

Dave Rosencrans

Dave Rosencrans is a native Washington resident, and an active maven/connector in development of our region's future machine. He's provided direction at the intersection of creativity and commerce, holding leadership positions at vanguard Northwest organizations such as KCMU Radio (now KEXP), Sub Pop Records, EMP Museum (now MoPOP) and Chihuly Studio. Additionally, his private consultancy offers small business and design expertise to many companies, including Electric Coffin. Currently, Dave is Director of Operations for Ecotope, a leading research, design and policy team delivering energy efficiency for the built environment.

Electric Coffin

Makers of fine art objects and fantastical innovations, Electric Coffin is a multi-disciplinary studio dedicated to high-concept and craftsmanship. The studio is comprised of individuals with varied artistic skillsets that collectively make up what they like to call a “super deluxe art machine.” With backgrounds ranging from painting and sculpture to fabrication and graphic design, they have worked on commercial projects spanning everything from full design builds to specific installation monuments. Founded in 2010 and based in artistically fertile Seattle, Electric Coffin’s work demonstrates its curiosity and diverse interests, as well as its commitment to stoking a desire to narrow the gap between standard commercial mentalities and a free-form, art-driven method of working. Known for its eccentric and witty style, the studio has won numerous accolades and awards.
