The Art of Discovery
(Formerly known as the Northwest Art in the Schools Program)

Developed and presented by the Junior League of Seattle in collaboration with Bellevue Arts Museum, The Art of Discovery provides an extraordinary opportunity for Eastside elementary school students to interact with original artwork from the Junior League’s stunning Northwest Art Collection.

The Junior League of Seattle’s Northwest Art Collection specializes in original art from the Northwest. Since it’s inception in 1960, the Junior League’s Northwest Art Collection has toured schools in the greater Seattle and Eastside area exposing thousands of children to some of the region’s most prominent artists.  Included in the Collection are artworks by Northwest masters Guy Anderson, Dale Chihuly, William Cumming, Morris Graves, Fay Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Sherry Markovitz, Alden Mason, Norie Sato, and many others. This unique and innovative program enables students and teachers to experience an art museum in a school setting. Under the guidance of trained art docents, children are able to discover outstanding original art from the region, to explore a wide range of media and to experience the artistic process first hand in guided art lessons.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

The Junior League and Bellevue Arts Museum invite your school to register for a workshop held at the Museum in which parent art docents and teachers learn from trained Junior League volunteers how to engage the elementary students in the art. Following the training, the Junior League of Seattle will loan pieces from their private art collection to each school for one week.
