Stefano Catalani, Curator

Originally from Rome, Italy, Museum Curator Stefano Catalani moved to Seattle in 2001. Catalani's classic studies in Italy provided him with a theoretical background in art history and philosophy along with a disciplined training in writing. Catalani has served as Curator at Bellevue Arts Museum since the Museum's reopening on June 18, 2005. Catalani's curatorial practice seeks to explore the fields of art, craft and design beyond their traditional definitions and distinctions. While holding true to the traditional expression of the potential of materials and processes inherent in craft, Catalani's focus aims at stressing its social implications by presenting craft as cultural signifier.

Prior to his current position at Bellevue Arts Museum and while in Europe, Catalani collaborated on artistic projects with the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Rome along with the cultural section of the Dutch Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Italian Institute of Culture in Malta. From 2000 to 2002, Catalani was guest curator at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Malta. In 2003, as an independent curator in Seattle, Catalani conceived and curated the critically acclaimed exhibition The Last Judgment Project at The Seattle Arts Festival - Bumbershoot 2003. In 2004, Catalani served as curatorial director at Atelier 31 Gallery in Seattle.
